Why visit Buhoma.

Buhoma is located in south- western part of Uganda and it is in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National park. This park is known for the endangered mountain gorillas and is unique in a way that it holds two primates living together in the same habitat i.e. Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. It’s also known to be home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas.

Buhoma sector of Bwindi is highly recommended because  it is a low altitude area compared to other sectors which eases the hikes and access to the mountain gorillas, it also has one of the best accommodations ranging from luxury, midrange and budget class of which gives a great experience to the tourists who choose visiting this area, however other sectors of Bwindi i.e. Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga also offer great natural unique experiences.

Things to do while in Buhoma.

Gorilla Trekking: This is the major activity done in Bwindi impenetrable national park and in this sector in particular. It has five families of habituated gorillas as of January 2026 and these are Mubare gorilla family, Katwe gorilla family, Muyambi gorilla family, Rushegura gorilla family and Habinyanja gorilla family. All these groups offer unique once- in -a lifetime encounters to the tourists who visit this sector. Each family is visited by 8 tourists daily. This is a conservation measure to limit over tourism and stress on animals.

Nature Walks: Buhoma sector offers both short and long nature walks, short nature walks can be arranged starting from Bwindi Visitor’s Information Centre to up to the waterfalls inside the forest, this can be done after your gorilla trekking in the afternoon or during your next day in Bwindi. These longer walks can be through the forest as you connect fro

m Buhoma the northern sector of Bwindi to Nkuringo in the southern part of Bwindi. these kind of nature walks offer tourists with a great connection with Bwindi forest by enjoying the great rivers, waterfalls, other primates like duikers, baboons, monkeys and the evergreen environment. it’s also another way of gaining fitness while in the natural environment.

 

Batwa cultural experiences, the Batwa are one of the world’s shortest people originally, they were the early forest dwellers of Bwindi forest before it was gazetted into a national park. These people called the forest home and they were hunters and food gatherers, whereby they hunted small wildlife like duikers, forest hogs and was a threat to the endangered mountain gorillas as some of the snares would catch the gorillas thus harming them, when conservation started these people were evicted from the forest and then turned into conservation refuges, they have set up the territories out of the forest where they show case and demonstrate their early life while in the forest. Going for this experience will be one of the best decisions a tourist will ever make. This has reduced the threat to wildlife as the Batwa were offered an alternative like agriculture as they no longer have access to the forest where they would go for hunting.

Community and Village Walks: tourists take up a journey to the local communities in Buhoma in order to learn and the Ugandan village life, people economic setups, tourists also get involved in culinary experiences i.e. tasting the local cuisines like Matooke, take part in community gardening, craft making is also one of the activities that can be enjoyed of this walk, where by tourist take part in gorilla wood carving.  Visit to the local schools, tourists explore the Ugandan education system and how some of these schools have contributed to literacy in the communities of Buhoma. These visits contribute a lot to the economy in Buhoma community as the local people are employed as guides, tourists also support the locals in purchase of souvenirs like baskets and gorilla wooden carved masks.

Coffee Experience: coffee is one of the major cash crops grown in the southern part of Uganda and Buhoma in particular. this is because of the fertile volcanic soils present in the Bwindi hills. Through coffee farming communities have been able to support their families through educating their children and using some other money to supplement other family activities like buying food and other basic needs. This is because coffee is one of Uganda’s crop exports thus being sold at a fair price. During this experience, tourists are taken through the farming, harvesting, drying and local processing demonstration. They also take part in processing the coffee locally while in the farm.

Bird watching, Buhoma being a tropical rainforest, it is a good spot for the bird watchers as it offers the most conducive natural habitat to several beautiful Albertine rift endemic, birds like the Regal sunbird, the great blue Turaco, and the Doherty’s bush-shrike. Buhoma has several site guides that will take you to the best habitats where to find these birds and more during your visit.

Conservation Projects. Buhoma has several grass root conservation projects for example, The Pangolin Rescue Centre which works hand in hand to educate the local communities on why it’s so important to preserve the pangolin which is currently highly trafficked and critically endangered. This NGO supports the local communities through empowering them with projects like bee keeping, Agriculture, and educating the local children with conservation based knowledge so that they are part of the conservation journey. Women Projects: There are several women groups around Buhoma for example Bwindi single mothers. This aims to empower women especially those facing stigma in the communities due to early marriages and its associated problems like divorce. they engage in activities like basket weaving, dances where by tourists support them through buying souvenirs, taking part in the weaving lessons. Some also support their children for a term or a year in school. As a tourism area, every visit in Buhoma helps to improve the community well-being.
